I've been searching for an update on my all-time favorite Sweet Dreams author, Barbara Conklin, for years now and have not had much success. Conklin's name and her most famous novel, P.S. I Love You, came to the forefront again a few years ago when Cecelia Ahern's novel of the same name was published and later made into a film starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler. Noting similarities in plot between Conklin's novel (and its sequel, Falling in Love Again) and Ahern's novel, many fans raised questions.

I dug up the following posting on a message board from 2003 on p45.net, which the is the most recent information I could find that mentions Ms. Conklin's current whereabouts:

PS, I Love You . . ., the story of a woman coping after her lover dies from cancer, is an idea for a novel that has made Cecilia Ahern, Bertie’s daughter, a millionaire. But, as Americans have been telling Sue all week, it has already been a bestseller for Barbara Conklin.

Published in 1981, Conklin’s PS I Love You was about, well, a woman coping after her lover dies from cancer. Yesterday Ahern’s agent said: “I’m sure Cecilia has never heard of the author; neither have I.”

Sue tracked down the 75-year-old to California and got her reaction to this amazing literary coincidence. “Well, her plot is about an adult and my heroine is just a teenager. Mine was a young adult book,” said Conklin. “Her book sounds wonderful. I hate it that she’s using my title but there’s nothing I can do. The title is not copyrighted.” And what did she think of the coincidence of title and plot theme? “I think she is using the idea of someone helping you from beyond death to cope with it. But we do get ideas from other books,” said Conklin. “If she got an idea, that’s great for her, and I envy her the money.”

So, no problem? “No, I don’t see a problem. I am very flattered if someone read it.”
